The University of Johannesburg defeated the NMMU Madibaz with a score line of 42 to 13 in the Varsity Cup at the Xerox Stadium in Port Elizabeth last night.
In what was the NMMU’s second home game of the season, the home crowd was in hopes that they would turn around last week’s away loss to the University Of Cape Town.
In both halves, the Madibaz started on the front foot with early tries only for UJ to hit back minutes later with scores of their own. The half time score was 8-21 to the University of Johannesburg.
A turning point in the second half came when the Madibaz mounted a phase by phase attack on UJ’s try line in the 47th minute. When they looked to be closing in for the score, the ball was intercepted by outside centre Robert de Bruyn who raced 95 metres across the field to score the bonus point try for UJ. That left the score at 13-26 to the men from Gauteng.
Seven minutes later a mistake by Robert de Bruyn himself lead to a counter attack try by Madibaz winger Tythan Adams. It was, however, later rescinded after a “white card challenge” by UJ lead to the TMO ruling NMMU offside on defence.
UJ’s last two tries would come from forward drives, with the last being a penalty try after NMMU’s scrum buckled under the forced pressure from the UJ pack in the 75th minute of the match. The final score of the night was 42-13 to the University of Johannesburg.
The NMMU Madibaz will now take on the undefeated UFS Shimlas next week Monday at the Xerox Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 18h30.
