The NMMU Madibaz were denied an upset victory last night when the UFS Shimlas edged them 23-21 at the Xerox Stadium during round 5 of the FNB Varsity Cup.
Three tries meant the men from the Free State lead the Madibaz 21-0 before captain Jarryd Buys got over the line for NMMU’s first try. The score at half time, 21-8.
The game looked set to be convincingly won by Shimlas until a fight back from the Madibaz led to tries from Tythan Adams and CJ Vellerman, which meant the scores were tied at 21-21 as the clock winded down to full time.
Madibaz hearts would be broken as UFS were awarded a penalty at the death which was slotted over by Shimlas flyhalf Neil Marais. The Shimlas winning 23-21.
NMMU have now dropped to seventh on the Varsity Cup log after four losses meant they have only gathered seven points in the competition. The UFS Shimlas lie in second and are still undefeated in this year’s competition.
The Madibaz now face a tough trip away to Stellenbosch as they will take on the Maties at the Danie Craven Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 18h30.
