In recent years, we have seen South African sport developing, particularly soccer. This development has seen prominent companies across the country becoming very much involved in helping the youth, especially in the Eastern Cape. A youth that is striving to become professional footballers and coaches in the near future but with less opportunities and facilities to achieve these goals.
South Africa’s leading petroleum brand, Engen, has joined forces together with SuperSport United, one of South Africa’s top elite soccer clubs based in Pretoria. This is to help young and talented individuals realise their dreams.
On 16 May, in conjunction with Engen Knockout Challenge, Port Elizabeth host club – Glenville Celtic, hosted a coaching clinic for 60 children at the Saints Sports Complex in Gelvandale at 14h30. This was a huge opportunity for the youngsters to showcase and improve their skills in sport, so they can have a platform to go explore their passion.
This event was filled with exciting and legendary football guests, such as the SuperSport Football Ambassador, Jabu Mahlangu, who was one of the most loved footballers the country has ever had. Also joining him was former Bafana Bafana international players, Thabo September and Ricardo Katza.
The list is endless, as Supersport United academy coach, Junior Bhengu also joined in to share his expertise. This was surely a wonderful day, filled with talented from youngster and wise elders – a day filled with opportunities for the underdeveloped province that we find ourselves.
Engen’s Group Sponsorship Manager, Brad Bergh, believes that this will be an opportunity to uplift and inspire the youth of Port Elizabeth and one day these youngsters may be one of the players to participate in the prestigious Engen Knockout Challenge.
